am – 11:15 am Connecting Students to their Community: Project-Based Learning That Matters Teachers and administrators all over the country struggle with how to develop a meaningful projects that reflect their school's mission and vision. This is especially true for charter schools, which often have specialized curriculum and employ innovative instructional techniques. In this workshop, we will take a look at one school's process of developing a cumulative project that aligns with its core mission. We will examine the evolution of the project, from a loosely structured performance project to a well-constructed community service based project complete with community connections, group panel assessment, and connections to college and career options after high school. Participants will leave the workshop with a packet of information that will help them design their own community-based projects at their school including: the project description, sample student proposals, and panel scoring rubrics. Emily Perkins, English and Drama Teacher, Natomas Charter School’s Performing & Fine Arts Academy (a 7-12 grade charter school program in Sacramento) California’s Charter Schools and The Ins and Outs of The Charter School Movement You teach in a charter school and know that you are in s special place. Is it because your school is a great school or is it because it’s a charter? How are charter schools actually started? Learn why charter schools are at the forefront of educational reform in the state and in the nation? This interactive workshop provides you with an overview of the charter process, discuss the philosophical tenets of charter schools, and look roles of teachers in the continued success of the charter movement. Frank Gonzales, General Manager, California Charter Schools Association, Former Teacher Ting Sun, Vice President, California Charter Schools Association, Former Teacher and Co-Founder of A Charter School Standards-Based Instruction Through Technology During ten years of operation, Fenton Avenue Charter School has successfully renewed its charter twice and increased test scores from single-digit numbers to consistently exceed statewide mandated benchmarks. State-of-the art technology and effective teacher collaboration have made both students and teachers better problem solvers and prosperous learners. This workshop will demonstrate strategies and projects developed by teachers incorporating technology with Open Court and other standards based curriculum Jacqueline Penner, Teacher, Fenton Avenue Charter School (a K-6 grade charter school in Los Angeles) Mark Sanders, Teacher, Fenton Avenue Charter School (a K-6 grade charter school in Los Angeles) 12:45 pm - 1:45 pm Bridging the Gap Participants will learn how one Personalized Learning Program bridged the gap between independent study and site based programs. Participants will see, through pictures and anecdotal stories, how The Camptonville Academy developed an innovative program utilizing educational resource centers and the talents of its many teachers. Hear about the pitfalls and the successes, as well as dreams for the future. Breaking into small groups, participants will have time to brainstorm how they will bring these ideas and more to their own schools. Beth Ward is the lead teacher of the Marysville Educational Resource Center for CORE@TCA (a K-12 grade charter school serving 200 students in Yuba and Sutter Counties). Karen Chandler is the lead teacher of the Chico Educational Resource Center for CORE@TCA (a K-12 grade charter school serving 200 students in Yuba and Sutter Counties). The Hedgehog Concept: High School Grade Level Promotions Through Mastery Stanislaus County Office of Education charter schools are unique School-to-Career, integrated, thematic approach high schools for motivated students. The schools, members of the Coalition of Essential Schools, blend academic projects with "real world" internships and experiences. Students graduate with a culminating celebration (Graduation By Exhibition) before a committee of school and business/community representatives. Students promote through "grade levels" via a martial arts approach of promotion-via demonstrating mastery of the California academic content standards and other program quality indicators. Participants in the session will experience a paradigm shifting experience. Participants will see how project-based methodologies and assessment/accountability interrelate. Bill Redford, Lead Teacher, Vocational Education Academy (a 9-12 grade charter school in Stanislaus County) Jeff Tilton, Director of Charter Schools, Stanislaus County Office of Education Building a Network of Charter School Teachers Help design and build a professional community of charter school teachers! As a charter school teacher, you are working with your colleagues around the clock to build an effective public school. How can you effectively share and disseminate best practices amongst other like-minded professionals given the time constraints imposed by your classroom and school leadership responsibilities? What forum would offer the greatest resource: Online? In person? By subject or grade level? By demographics of students served? Join other teacher leaders to discuss these questions, to help design a solution, and to join the founding team of a statewide progressive teacher network. Temp Keller, Founder and President, RISE (Resources for Indispensable Schools and Educators), and Former Teacher at East Palo Alto Charter School 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm Building a Network of Charter School Teachers Help design and build a professional community of charter school teachers! Temp Keller, Founder and President, RISE (Resources for Indispensable Schools and Educators), and Former Teacher at East Palo Alto Charter School Redefining Teacher Leadership Through Teacher Collaborative Do teachers always need to be employees? Several groups of teachers in the Midwest are showing that teachers can own their own professional practices just as other professionals do in law, medicine and other fields. This session will explain the legal arrangements used in these Teacher Professional Practices. The session will also explain the origin of this development and the implications that this fundamental change holds for teachers, schools and students. Joe Graba, Education Evolving Conceptual Learning: Making the Invisible Visible This session will focus on the dynamics of "Conceptual Learning" and the underachieving student. Teachers and administrators will leave with powerful insights that turn learning theory into effective, results-oriented classroom practices. Strategies presented are appropriate for all academic courses taught at the secondary level. Dennis P. Wymbs, Guajome Park Academy (a 6-12 grade charter program in San Diego area) |
