We will focus on the balancing of attendance, academic and behavioral regulations with sound ethical teaching in the independent study format and how to generate high accountability for teachers, students and schools. In this case-based session, participants decide whether to renew a school's charter. The case is based on actual performance data and addresses tensions inherent in applying No Child Left Behind requirements. Technical and political challenges of making renewal decisions are highlighted. The presentation includes the nuts-and-bolts of high school graduation, internship, apprenticeship and vocational training opportunities, college admission, and the different ways to make a student's high school experience work well for them. Take part in "voting" using hand-held devices, and see examples of how an interactive system has been successfully used in schools.
